Beauty and education
Awarenesscampaign to promote digital literacy in adult education
DESCRIPTION /
Our altered perception of our bodies due to “perfect images” has led to us feeling increasingly bad about our own bodies as a result of digitalisation. Unfortunately, this is already becoming the norm across Europe. It is a highly topical issue that requires urgent action, both personally and institutionally.
Our project aims to promote key aspects of digital competence and specifically focus on dealing with body images and ideals of beauty conveyed by the media. We emphasise the aspect of mutual learning.
RESULTS /
In its realisation, “BEAUTY-BUBBLE” trains adults in their digital skills through an innovative experiential educational approach in a dome tent.
The analogue installation with digital elements in the form of a dome tent enables an insight to be gained directly through experience thanks to interactive elements that dissolve the viewer’s distance. At the centre of the exhibition is the theme
“Ideals of beauty and self-staging in the media and their effects”.
The dome tent symbolises the filter bubble on the internet, which shows us the same body ideals over and over again in a continuous loop. By connecting the “inner images” with those on the outside, for example, visitors are given the opportunity to reflect, change their own body image and recognise media manipulation. Visual impulses are a good way to get into the topic together.
This implementation trains people with and without disabilities in particular, as highly emotionalised or insecure people are more susceptible to ideals of beauty conveyed by the media, even if they cannot be implemented in reality. This requires the ability to reflect and train one’s own body awareness in order to be able to react confidently to information and images.
AMBITIONS /
The main aim of the project is to raise awareness and educate adults with and without disabilities about media beauty images and digital literacy. This is regarded as a central key competence for lifelong learning and
Reflecting on what the flood of information and images in digital media does to us is an essential part of this competence.
This target group receives material and background information on the BEAUTY-BUBBLE topics and is thus sensitised and professionalised. With the topics “Self-presentation in social media” and “Media ideals of beauty and their effects on our thoughts, feelings and actions”, we cover two areas that are essential when dealing with the media world.
As a result, we will:
- enable an analogue experience installation with digital elements in 3 European cities (Hamburg, Athens, Pleven), which through interactive parts, dissolves the viewer distance with an insight gained directly through experience
- adapt existing working material from interdisciplinary workshops on the topics of fake news and data protection to specific countries
- carry out a social media campaign
- create a multilingual website
- Design the analogue installation into a virtual tour
More detailed goals are:
- To redefine the perception of beauty, disability and diversity.
- Raise awareness of the importance of dig. Expertise with a focus on self-presentation and ideals of beauty on the internet and their impact on our thoughts, feelings and actions.
- Raising awareness for a vigilant, critical and self-determined approach to our own filter bubble, which can have an impact on our self-perception and self-esteem.
- Addressing a broad target group of media users.
